The Essential Health Benefits of an Enriched Antioxidant Diet for Your Pets

Over the years, research has shown that pet food diets are not sufficient to control the antioxidant levels necessary to prevent disease. Adding balanced and natural pet vitamin supplements to your dog or cat’s daily diet will combat disease and optimize your pet’s health, longevity and wellness.

Antioxidants play a crucial role in maintaining good health as they ward off the harmful effects of free radicals. Therefore, a generous amount of antioxidant-enriched foods should be added to your pet’s diet to build a strong immune system.

A typical antioxidant-rich diet contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E, L-Carnitine, DL-Lipoic acid, as well as fruit and vegetable extracts. 

Vitamin C is extremely safe and can be given in large doses without fear of harmful side-effects. Depending on the size of your dog, add between 50mg to 100mg daily to his bowl of food.

Vitamin E should be administered at 100 IU daily for small breeds, with dosages increasing to a maximum of 400IU daily for larger breeds.

Feed your pets a high-quality home-made meal containing ingredients that are rich in antioxidants. Also, add fresh organic pet treats as a special added extra for good behaviour, or simply just to say thank you.

Foods that are rich in antioxidants and suitable to feed your pet include:

  • Dried Red Kidney, Pinto and Black beans – which contain high levels of Folate, aka Vitamin B9, that fights heart disease
  • Cranberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries – these contain Ellagitannin that prevents the growth of cancer cells. Blueberries are also said to contain Anthocyanins that protects brain cells
  • Pecan nuts contain Potassium that strengthens muscles and improves heartbeat and breathing

Also, try adding vegetables to their meals such as broccoli, cabbage and potatoes.

Don’t forget that most foods rich in antioxidants lose some of their nutritious value when cooked. The best possible way to retain those rich vitamins and minerals is to steam the vegetables.
